Artistic
talent always fascinates me. When I observe someone playing the piano or keyboard,
it appears to me that they must have brains in their fingers! It is enough of
a challenge for me to just type an article like this.
Those who work with clay are especially fascinating. Watching a pottery
wheel turn under the hand of a skilled artist, one might think the process to
be easy. Not for me; I start AND end with a LUMP of clay.
God refers to Himself as being like a potter. Jeremiah was sent to
the potter's house to observe a message for Israel. He queried, "O house of Israel,
can I not do with you as the potter does?" Our lives individually are like Israel's
as a nation (see Romans
9:21). God is the Potter and we are the
clay.
Have you come off the wheel in a different shape than you think you
ought to be? Are you called to a life that seems unfair? Are you struggling with
how God is molding you? The Lord understands. These two passages of Scripture,
and others, remind us that we are not our own, we are bought with a price. (1
Corinthians 6:20)
Can you imagine a piece of clay becoming resistant to the potter?
At that point there are two choices: the clay can be wetted, worked, and modified
to make it pliable, or it can be tossed aside to be replaced by other, more workable
clay. What kind of clay do you want to be?
All Scripture references are from the New American Standard Version unless otherwise noted.
