A
recent spring snowstorm hit our area, bringing picture postcard vistas. While
we were able to enjoy the beauty as the sun came out the next day, many folks
in the Denver area were suffering from power outages. The heavy, wet snow stuck
to everything including power lines. The weight caused power lines to sag and,
in some cases, the supporting poles snapped off like some giant had forced them
over.
It is expensive and challenging to build structures strong enough
to hold back all the possible forces of God's creation. But looking at the damage
is a good reminder of how a gradually building force can be so destructive.
Paul's protege' Timothy had to deal with that kind of force
in his church. Paul warned him that "difficult times" (Verse
1) would come as the sins of men started to build up. Particularly, Timothy
was to beware of the advantage-takers who preyed on "weak women weighed down with
sins" (Verse
6).
Sin does weigh us down. It usually builds up in a gradual manner,
much like the heavy snow did on power lines. As with the snow, sin can be appealing
to the senses while hiding a destructive power.
If you are under the power of some "little sin," be aware that
its force continues to build up with time. It will start to sag your "power lines"
(relationship with God) and eventually bring you an outage.
Why not deal with your sin today? Jesus is ready to forgive.
