It all started
as a good deed. I stopped by the flower shop on my way home and picked up a bunch
of carnations. Wanting to surprise Bonita, I quickly trimmed the stems and looked
for a place to get "rid of the evidence." It is at that point that I lost my mind
and ran them down the new garbage disposal!
Did you
know that carnation stems are kind of woody in texture? The clog was
so bad our plumber
took worked several hours with a rooter devise to get it open. One
friend commented, "so
you are human after all?" As a reminder of my human frailties,
God allows humbling things to happen to me.
Jesus taught
His disciples the practice of humility and service to others. As
one of His last earthly
acts,
John 13 records that Jesus "got up from supper, and laid aside
His garments; and taking
a towel, He girded Himself. Then He poured water into the basin, and
began to wash the disciples'
feet... " (Verses
4 and 5).
He applied
the message of His humble action to His disciples when He told
them they were to wash
one another's feet. In other words, they were to serve one another. We
are to humbly serve one another too.
Who and
how does God want you to serve today? Whose feet should you wash?
If you want to be like
Jesus, you must learn to humbly serve others.
