A character
trait often found in toddlers is growing independence. On uncountable occasions
our children uttered phrases like "do it own self" and
later, "I can do it myself!" We need to grow and become independent to handle
life, but that can be taken too far. We need each other!
When life gets tough, few things make it more bearable than a person who
persists in blessing you. Although some of us may want to "do it ourselves",
when it comes to handling life's problems, most are happy to have someone come
along side and help.
If you have someone who does that in your life, you should
be thanking God for them. Notice Paul's example, "We always thank God for all
of you, mentioning you in our prayers" (1 Thess. 1:2). Paul went on to explain
in verse 3 that the Thessalonians were helping to spread the Gospel. Paul felt
assisted by them and prayed for them. His prayers included a thankful heart before
God for the Thessalonian Christians.
Remember to not only be thankful for the things you have received from God
but the people God has placed in your life to bless you. Pray for them as
well. In doing so, you begin to repay them for the blessing they are or have
been to you.
