It is
said that there used to be a North American tribal chief who daily would rise
with the sun and greet it when he exited his tent. Then he would point at the
sun and trace his hand across his view of the sky "showing" the sun the path it
was to take for the day. Now that's arrogance!
Are you an arrogant person? Probably not in the way we usually
define the term. We usually think of an arrogant person as one with his or her
"nose in the air", indicating that others around are less than equals. But God
illustrates the average arrogant person differently.
After writing of the person who makes plans to go on an extended
business trip, he says, "Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow.
You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away."
In other words, we don't even know if we are going to we alive for sure tomorrow.
James then says, "Instead, you ought to say, "If the Lord wills,
we will live and also do this or that. But as it is you boast in your arrogance...
"
When you make plans, do you take the Lord's will into account?
If you want to live humbly before God, remember that God may have plans that differ
from yours. Seek Him for direction.
