When
Bonita and I were newly married, I had a job maintaining the physical needs of
a nursing home facility. In other words, I fixed things and prevented problems
whenever possible. After about four months on the job, I was given a performance
review. If I scored over a certain level, I would get a much-needed raise.
All went well until a question about a certain duty came up.
I hadn't fulfilled the requirements in this area and it was just enough of a black
mark to reduce the amount of raise by half. You may think that sounds fair and
I shouldn't have gotten the raise. However, I had never been given a job description
and was unaware of the requirement!Job descriptions are very helpful in eliminating
misunderstandings. Jesus words give a clear primary job description for all believers
in Matthew
28:19. We are to "go" and "make disciples" for Jesus' sake. We are not called
to save souls, as that is the supernatural work of Christ. We should bring people
to meet Jesus, but their response to Him is between them and God.
You may be frustrated with the results of your Christian service.
If so, remember that God must do the work through you, and you are not responsible
for the results. You are called to be faithful. Are you faithful to the work Jesus
has given you to do? Don't just feel guilty if you are not. Instead, ask the Lord's
forgiveness and move on. There's a job for you to do!
