The
last six months have probably held some of the greatest physical testing for me
of my whole life. The most recent opinion from the doctors is that I have a small
disk problem in my neck. It is so minor so they are not even recommending therapy
unless my symptoms get worse. A soy products allergy apparently triggers a little
more swelling in the disk, creating pressure on the nerve going to my face causing
a disconcerting "stingling."
There are times when I wonder if I will ever get back to normal
or if I can fulfill my pastoral calling and writing duties while I am dealing
with stuff like this. To say the least, I am learning a lot! Paul spoke of his
perennial affliction in 2
Corinthians 12:7-10. Although I doubt that I have a trial
as bad as Paul's, I can learn from his reaction to the "thorn in the flesh" (verse.
7). His conclusion is "when I am weak, then I am strong" (verse 10). I want to
be strong!
James
1:12 says, "Consider it all joy my brethren when you en-counter
various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance." God
has been molding me as a father, husband and pastor. Would I like my trials to
be over? Sure! But I also want to be like Jesus. And if this is what it takes,
I am willing!
What will it take to help you to listen to God's voice? Now
would be a good time to say to the Lord, "I am listening, I want to hear what
You want me to hear. Don't let me be stubborn or resistant to Your leading and
quiet voice."
