As
each of our older kids reached their middle teens the subject of driving a car
became a regular conversation starter. Few things in life are more traumatic
(for the parents) and exciting for the young person than getting a driver's license.
With the privilege of driving comes a great responsibility. Vehicles can
be deadly to those inside and out. A driver's license gives permission to
drive a car but does not convey the ability or wisdom to do so.
While Paul was writing to the Romans, he strongly emphasized God's grace.
In doing so, he opened a can of worms that he closed in chapter 6. Some
might have gotten the impression that they could use God's grace as a
license to sin. Romans 6:1-2 says, "shall we go on sinning so that grace may
increase? By no means! We died to sin."
Paul's argument is that Christians have no business flaunting God's grace
because they will not receive eternal punishment for their sins. You are to
live above that temptation. Paul later wrote, "I have been crucified with Christ;
and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. who loved me and gave
Himself up for me."
