Our house
has a built-on deck that overlooks the back yard and much of the area the kids
can play in. When we want to get them to come in, it is relatively easy to bellow
from that porch and get the attention of about half the kids in town. If one of
ours happens to be down the block a ways, we can get their attention and then
it is up to them to come find out why we called. Perhaps
you can see how that might be a problem! The nature of kids dictates that if they
know they can't break a rule, they may try to find some way to bend it. So, sometimes
when they are called they call back and ask, "What ?" If they don't HEAR an answer,
they just don't come! Human nature being what it is, even
grownups will do this. If we don't really want to hear something we don't
try very hard to find out what the message is. Paul told the Thessalonians
that, "God has not called us for the purpose of impurity, but in sanctification"
(1
Thessalonians 4:7). "Called" doesn't mean in the verbal sense, but
a response is required. People tend to avoid hearing what God has to say
because they really don't want to know! With my children,
if they pull a "I'm going to ignore that," they pay for it when they get home.
Same goes for us if we ignore God's call
on our lives for sanctification or whatever.
