July 4th the United States celebrates its declaration and war for independence from Britain in 1776. Intermixed with a great show of celebratory fireworks and special events are grand words rejoicing over our freedom. At times, that very freedom is used to tear down and vilify the country that celebrates it.
Paul had experienced freedom on several levels, and shared some of that experience with his Philippian readers. He had joy, peace, and purpose in life. He was no longer imprisoned by the hatred and misplaced zeal that had driven him to persecute Christians. As the U.S. had focused its efforts to secure freedom, Paul was pressing on in spiritual freedom.
Paul wrote, "Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."
Real freedom is found in commitment to Christ!
Perhaps you can celebrate your freedom from the penalty of sin this week. Additionally, you can take on the freedom found in serving Jesus. Why not make that commitment today?
