Two
hunters flew into remote Alaska and bagged a moose each. When the plane
returned to pick them up, the pilot looked at the animals and said, "This little
plane won't lift all of us, the equipment, and both of those animals. You'll
have to leave one. We'd never make it over the trees on the take off."
The hunters argued with the
pilot that they got two last year and that pilot hadn't been AFRAID to take
off with
that load. "Was he a better pilot
than you are?" they taunted?
Not wanting to be outdone, the
pilot declared he was as good as
any pilot alive. He would take the full load.
As the plane took off it floundered and
caught the top of the trees throwing hunters, pilot and moose carcasses
all over
the woods. No one was badly
injured, but the dazed pilot asked, "where are we?"
One of the Texans spoke up as he
rolled from a brush pile, "I'd guess
about 100 yards further than last year!"
This account brings a chuckle
to our hearts, but it's true folly to attempt something
because of goading or a dare. Proverbs 16:18 says,
"Pride goes before destruction
and a haughty spirit before stumbling." The Devil must get a lot of
mileage out of egging
people on, working their pride and
emotions. How often
do Christians look like fools because they
forget this verse?
Paul told his readers
to "walk by the Spirit and you will not carry out
the desire of the flesh." When you choose to
walk in the flesh, you will
do the deeds of the flesh.
