I
stood at the plate for the first time in the only all-star baseball game in which
I ever played. The bases were loaded and two outs showed on the scoreboard. I
had longed for this chance since I had been in third grade: the chance to be the
hero and win the game for my team.
It was a lot of pressure for a sixth grader. But if I wanted
to play with the "big boys" there was going to be pressure. I wish I could say
that I triumphantly rounded the bases and won the game, but I grounded out to
the shortstop instead.
I can't really imagine having peace in a situation like that.
In fact, part of what makes the game exciting is the tension. But if I lived every
minute that way, it would likely affect my health and shorten my life. Peace is
an essential ingredient in a happy and long life.
Paul wrote the Thessalonians a benediction of peace. "May the
Lord of peace Himself continually give you peace in every circumstance" (verse
16). That great commodity, peace, can be experienced as you walk with
Jesus. He is the Prince of Peace! When you walk with Him, His peace rubs off on
you.
Get to know the God of Peace through Jesus Christ His Son.
In knowing Him you can have peace in life's circumstances. Apart from Him
you will suffer the peacelessness of this world.
