One of the
highlights of my life was my ordination
for the ministry. Ordination is a time of testing, recognition and celebration.
First a group of godly
people sat with me in counsel to ask me about my calling, faith and knowledge
of the Bible. After they determined that I was called, I was recognized
in a formal service followed by a fellowship time.
What sticks out most in my memory is
not the hard questions at the examination, nor the congratulations that
go along with such an occasion.
I most remember heavy hands. Ordination in our tradition includes ceremony
where those taking part gathered round and prayed over me while laying their
hands on me. I
remember the weight of those hands reminding
me of the weighty responsibility I was sharing.
When I read Jesus' Great
Commission, I
think of the great weight of responsibility that we as believers bear. Christ
exited earth leaving
behind people like us to carry on by proclaiming salvation
in His Name. We are to "go," "make
disciples", "baptize" and "teach" everyone.
Will you help bear the weight in that commission? We
all should carry part of the load.
Why not pray something like this? "Lord, what part do You have
for me to play in carrying out Your commission today?"!
