A
few days ago we had a lot of car accidents in our area. I came upon one of them
shortly after it happened. Simply put, the accident was caused by one vehicle
not yielding to the other. A car headed west on our local highway was struck by
a car that turned into its side. Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt, but it
could have been much worse.
Most car accidents happen because someone does not yield the
right of way to someone else; sometimes it is out of ignorance, sometimes it is
intentional. In either case, when two vehicles try to occupy the same space, the
laws of physics do not allow molecules to get that close together.
In the world of relationships, we also have to learn to yield.
Two wills cannot occupy the same space in life unless they are in agreement. When
they try to, there is a crash. Because of this law, God has set up rules of order.
In this passage, Paul addresses wives, husbands, children, and slaves. Each are
given a some very specific directions as to how they are to treat one another.
Some believe that Paul was teaching that wives are somehow inferior.
However, Paul was only giving the rules of the road. Someone has to yield.
"Whatever you do, do it for the Lord." (verse
23)
