I
cook some of the time at home. My favorite meal to fix is breakfast because it
is my favorite meal to eat! If my body would tolerate it, I would have eggs, pancakes,
and bacon every morning. If they weren't such a mess to make, I would have waffles
more often as well.
Over the years, I've had to be more careful in my cooking. It seems
that I don't have a very good eye (or tongue) for deciding how much seasoning
to put in something. If I shake in the amount of pepper on scrambled eggs that
looks right to me, some of my family won't eat them! Seasoning makes all of the
difference in a food's flavor.
Paul taught that Christians were also to remember their
role as "seasoning". In particular, what we say can be like hot pepper or a cold
drink of water to a thirsty person (verse
6). James wrote of the danger of our speech or tongue when he said it is like
a fire (James
3). Have you checked lately to see if your speech blesses others or burns
them?
Grace is the spice of choice for the Christian
(verse
6). We are to be students of human nature. Paul says that we are to know "how
we should respond to each person." Given the damage or good that can be done by
our words, we should pray daily that God will teach us to speak the grace-filled
words He wants us to say.
