When
I was about nine years old, my family went on a vacation trip that included a
stop at the Great Salt Lake. It is almost impossible for a person to sink in that
brackish water. However, it is still possible to drown. One of my sisters discovered
this truth the hard way.
While attempting to float on her back, some rather large waves
caused her to roll. Unfortunately, she took a breath while she was face down.
Several nearby swimmers noticed her plight and made their way to her rescue. If
they had not stopped her uncontrolled roll she might not have survived.
Many of us can identify with being rescued. Some may have been
saved from great pain, others even from death. Paul told the Colossian readers
that their eternal rescue had been secured. One of the many things that Jesus
Christ accomplished by His death and resurrection was our rescue from certain
eternal punishment. He says in verse
13 (NIV), "For He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought
us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness
of sins."
The great observation in these words is for those who have put
their faith in Christ. What kingdom are you in? Have you been rescued
from the darkness?
