One
of my fondest memories as a grade school boy was living in an area where there
were lots of leafy trees. Our street was lined with elm trees that were always
depositing their leaves in the street gutters. Invariably, a heavy rain would
wash the leaves into the sewer grates, stopping the water and creating a boyhood
play area. It was great for floating homemade boats and working on our irrigation
expertise.
Unfortunately, dammed up water on a city street is not good
for everyone. After enjoying the extra pools for a while, we would clear the leaves
and watch the water flow.
When Paul wrote to the Colossians, he challenged them to not
dam up peace. He said in verse
15, "Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts...
" It seems that when we do not have peace, it is often our own fault because we
do not let it flow in our lives.
Most people would say they desire peace. However, actions speak
louder than words. We constantly feed ourselves noise, seldom putting ourselves
in a quiet place. We act like it is easier to fret over a problem than to open
God's Word and seek His comfort. Paul says, "Let!"
Jesus Christ offers us, "Peace that passes all understanding."
Will you let the water flow? Start today by reading the Bible and asking God for
His peace.
