If
you have ever given in to watching a martial arts movie, one thing you have seen
happen is the disarming of what may be a very powerful opponent. The hero can
have nothing to work with except his hands and feet, and still take away an automatic
weapon from the bad guys.
Although much of what we see on the big screen may be fanciful,
it is possible to disarm a great opponent if you know what you're doing. With
some training, a weaker person can learn to fend off an attacker with success.
The apostle Paul told his readers in Colossae that their great
opponent had already been disarmed. The Expert who had beaten him was Christ himself.
It says in verse
15 (NIV), "And having disarmed the powers and authorities, He (Jesus) made
a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the Cross." Christ had the
strength, authority, weapons, to defeat the enemy of our souls.
The point of Paul's message was to encourage and remind the
reader that our ultimate enemy has already been defeated. Paul's word picture
was of the Romans who captured conquered leaders and put them on display so everyone
could see they had been beaten.
Jesus Christ has already won! Satan is on display. He fights
you as a defeated foe.
