There
is a tree in our summer camp that has roots like no other I have ever seen. The
small pine is probably dozens of years old and protrudes right out of a rock.
This year I was surprised to find the tree was tipped over but still looking healthy
otherwise. Closer examination of the roots revealed the tree had literally been
growing on top of the rock. But the root system had grown deep in to a crack.
When the winds had been just right, the tree bent over, but the anchor in the
rock still remained.
In verse
7 Paul reminds the Colossians that they are "firmly
rooted and now being built up in Him (Jesus Christ)." The root of a solid Christian
life is growing firmly into Jesus Christ. He is the One who said from Him would
flow "living water" (John
4:10-11 ).
Our camp's tree has a main root that will not be easily broken. It
grew in such a way that the tree could bend over yet stay attached. Storms of
life sometimes take a toll on our faith. Yet, if we are solidly established in
Jesus Christ, we will bend but never break off. Our faith will remain under the
worst of circumstances. How's your spiritual roots?
You can and should grow deeper and stronger roots in your relationship
to Jesus. If you want to be like a "tree planted beside Living Waters" (Psalm
1 ), extend your roots toward the Rock, Jesus.

Standard Version unless otherwise noted.
