In a television interview, Lance Armstrong, four-time Tour de France winner, was asked how he thought he would have done if he had not had to battle cancer. His answer was somewhat astounding. Armstrong said that he would not likely have won any of the grueling bicycle races if he had not had cancer first.
The interviewer was confused until he explained. Lance said that he had been through very difficult times while fighting cancer. He had been sick and in a great deal of pain for long periods of time. That experience had given him a perspective that the other riders didn't have. When he pushed himself beyond what others only dreamed of, it was never as bad as what he had already experienced in fighting cancer.
Pain and discomfort and knowing what you can accomplish is all a matter of perspective!
Jesus gave the "rich, young" would-be-disciple a perspective jolt in Luke 18. The young man thought that he was "good enough" to follow Christ. But Jesus knew his wealth had him, rather than his possessing it. You cannot serve Christ wholly with something between you and God.
When you struggle with what Jesus is calling you to do, make sure you attempt to see from God's perspective. God never calls you to do something He does not enable and empower you to handle. He is even now making you into who He wants you to be.
