Our
five-year-old dog, Oreo, is a very bright animal, seldom giving us any problems.
He just doesn't bark unless there is a reason, has never needed to go to the vet,
plays nice with the kids, and would rather lick you to death than growl at you.
He is a people lover! When the kids are playing, he will do almost anything to
be outside the fence with them.
Therein lies Oreo's biggest challenge. How does a smart, curious dog
respond to a fence? We let him out to play with the children, but he wants out
on his own as well. His intelligence makes him a leading-roll candidate for a
dog version of the movie "The Great Escape!" He looks for a way out because he
doesn't understand the fence is there for his protection.
Have you read the Ten Commandments lately? (Exodus
10:1-17) Human nature is like that of
my dog. He seems to think there are marvelous things outside the fence that he
is missing out on. In our area he could very well have a shortened life if he
doesn't stay within the confines of his "commandments." Outside the fence are
large elk, coyotes, bears, mountain lions, and busy traffic.
Like Oreo, you may think that God's commandments are holding you
back. But the Bible illustrates and teaches that they exist to show us our sinfulness
and the need for God's grace, as well as protect us from sin that would subtly
destroy us.
