Opposition
to the truth of the resurrection of Jesus Christ was very strong. Most of the
religious leaders were not willing to accept the possibility that Jesus Christ
had indeed risen from the dead. The Roman soldiers were superstitious and had
no background that would lead them to much more than fear.
Why would educated people, who were saying that they believed in a coming
Messiah, decide not to believe? The answer apparently lies in a sad truth.
John 11:48 quotes one of the religious leaders saying "If we let Him go on like
this, all men will believe in Him, the Romans will come and take away both our
place and our nation." Protecting their earthly position had become more important
than the truth.
Each of us has to examine our own hearts and question, "Do I believe
the Resurrection of Jesus Christ took place and am I ready to stand before Him?" Is
there anything going on in your life that might make you wish that the Resurrection
was not true? Would you find yourself so concerned about the things of this world
that you could not respond to something miraculous God is doing or has done?
If you struggle with any of the above questions, you better take some
time today to get things right with God.
