It is that time of year again when
our thoughts turn to the joy of filling out tax forms! I am not among those who
enjoy tax forms. About 14 years ago I took a course so I could help others fill
out their taxes. Much of what I learned is no longer relevant, as the tax codes
have changed over the years. The fun is gone.
One thing is for sure: taxes are hard to escape. You can go
to prison for trying to do so. Moreover, if you are like me, you think you might
be able to do a better job with the money than the government does. When you cannot
afford to pay what you owe, the experience is worsened.
There
is a universal tax that must be paid. God's holiness mandates it. "The
wages of sin is death."
(Romans
3:23) Sin will
cost you and me our very souls. The only way
we can handle such
a tax is to let someone else pay it for us. God has offered to do so.
In Romans 5:8 the Bible
says, "But God demonstrated His own love toward us,
in that while we were
yet sinners, Christ died for us." If you try to prepare for this tax on
your own, it will
be beyond your ability to pay. Christ's sacrificial death is your only
answer.
Do you
have money saved to pay your taxes? You can't save enough to cover
your sin tax. No amount
of doing good is enough. Today, why not trust
Jesus Christ to pay it
all for you? He wants to!
