Mohammad Ali, the former world heavyweight
boxing champ, was a flamboyant, very self confident individual. Today he suffers
from brain injury related ailments that make him a shadow of what he used to be.
Ali is reported to have
flown on a jet once when he gave the flight attendants some good-natured trouble.
After going through the
seatbelt instruction required on all flights, a stewardess noticed that
Ali had still not buckled his lap belt.
"Sir," she said, "Please buckle your seat
belt." Ali replied, "Superman don't need no seatbelt!"
The flight attendant paused only for a moment
and then countered, "Superman don't need no plane!" Ali complied with her request.
It is one thing to make claims and state
high intentions, it is another to walk your talk in everyday life. In the boxing
ring Ali came close to living
out his "I'm the greatest" claims, but Superman he was and is not.
Jesus confronted the religious leaders of
his day with very strong words when he revealed their hypocrisy. In verses
25 & 26 he pointed
out that they were working hard at making sure the outside of things looked good
while the inside was left
dirty. He described them not only as hypocrites but also "blind" (verse
24), "fools" (verse
17), "whitewashed tombs" (verse
27), and even "serpents", (verse
33). Jesus' harshest
words were reserved for those who didn't walk their talk.
Do you walk yours? Do you live what you
say you believe? With God's help, you can start today.
