I have a dummy living in my office. Actually
"Jerry" is more properly referred to as a figure in the ventriloquist trade. He
joined our family a number
of years ago when his previous manipulator went on to be with the Lord. He
has a part in some aspects of our ministry.
As a ventriloquist I work his controls and
try to animate him so that he looks somewhat realistic. The whole thing can be
a lot of fun because "Jerry"
can get away with saying things I can't. But, nothing on a ventriloquist dummy
works unless someone is
at the controls.
Sometimes people act like a ventriloquist is
controlling them. Crowds will respond like a single person. Followers mindlessly
do the bidding of a leader
even to the point of death as happened in Jonestown, Guyana in 1978, when
913 people lead by Jim Jones died in a mass suicide.
The Bible calls on the Christian believer to
stand firm even when no one else will. Read the account of Joshua and Caleb's
heroic stand in Numbers
13 & 14. Most of Israel rebelled against following God's will. Numbers
13:30 records Caleb's
words, "... We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we
will surely overcome (the land)." In Numbers
14:10 the majority
was ready to stone those standing for God's leading.
Standing up for the Lord and for what is
right is not easy. But standing is what we are called to do if we follow the Lord.
