Recently, devastating fires have swept through
our part of Colorado. More than 40 homes and structures burned to the ground as
winds whipped flames into
the unusually dry timber of the eastern foothills of the Rockies. Firefighters
who initially tried to dowse the flames, at one point had to simply run for their
lives.
Thousands of people were evacuated from their
homes as the fire became more viscous and unpredictable. My wife, Bonita, and
I had some discussions that
I would guess were going on in many of the homes in our area. "What do we
want to save if we have to abandon our home in a hurry? What really matters to
us?"
Thank the Lord, we never had to enact our evacuation
plan. God miraculously changed the weather and the flames were stopped. But the
whole incident made us think
again about what is really important.
Jesus' words to His followers were spoken
to bring about the same effect. Beginning in Matthew
6:19 Jesus tells them not to store
up things that are destructible by earthly disasters. Verse 20 says, "But store
up for yourselves treasures
in heaven" where they can't be destroyed. Verse 33 quotes Jesus as saying,
"But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be
added to you."
