I watched a report on TV a few years back telling about one of the great
baseball hitters of the game. For weeks, people had been watching his approach
to the 3000 career hit mark. The last twenty-five balls or so from those
hits were being set aside for a charity auction. The suspense built as Dave
Winfield got closer and closer to his goal. He wanted to be on the home
field if it would be possible. He was! On Sept. 16th, 1993 he became the
19 player to reach the goal.
The ability to hit a baseball with power and authority takes
a combination of talent, training and maybe occasionally, "luck." Living
the Christian life takes training and power from outside yourself. The training
you need comes from knowing and living out the Word of God. The Power comes
not from yourself, but from God's Spirit indwelling you.
Acts 1:8 says, "but you
shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall
be My witnesses..." God supplies the Spirit to all believers (see Romans
8:9). The Greek word for power (from which we get "dynamite") meant
"the greatest imaginable power." That is what is available to us as Christians.
It's ours if we are on the playing field depending on the Spirit to lead
us. We continue our "training" by reading and studying the Word and praying.
We can become explosive, spiritual power hitters for the Lord if we depend
on Him!
